People Catherine Raw wins 2017 ‘Young Mining Professionals of the Year’ award

The Eira Thomas award recognizes mining professionals under 40 years of age who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and innovative thinking to provide value for their companies and shareholders.

Barrick's Chief Financial Officer Catherine Raw has won the Young Mining Professionals of the Year Award for 2017.

Raw is one of two recipients of the award, which recognizes mining professionals under 40 years of age who, during the past year and throughout the course of their careers, have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and innovative thinking to provide value for their companies and shareholders.

Discussing the award with The Northern Miner, Raw says her philosphy for success is simple: manage risk, focus on returns, and remember mining is about playing the long game.

"My strategy for success is be transparent, be open-minded, and welcome the challenge," she says.

What advice does Raw have for young people entering the mining industry? She says the industry is foundational to the global economy, and yet considered in the scheme of things as relatively niche.

"By bringing in new ideas and combining them with the lessons of the past, the younger generation can make the mining industry, and the gold industry in particular, investable again."
