Michael Brown, President of Barrick USA, is the 2017 recipient of the Public Education Foundation’s Education Hero Award. The award honors individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and dedication to children and education in Nevada. It was presented to Brown at the Foundation’s Education Hero Award Gala in Las Vegas on September 23.
“Michael Brown and Barrick Gold Corporation have made significant charitable and civic contributions to public education and have been dedicated to the advancement of educational opportunities for all children,” The Foundation said. “They have distinguished themselves by their longstanding commitment to public education and engagement with The Public Education Foundation, including actively growing the Foundation’s leadership programs.”
Education is the foundational partnership in every community where Barrick operates in the world.
In addition to recognizing Brown, the Foundation also honored former Nevada State Senator Debbie Smith (posthumously) with a Lifetime Education Achievement Award. The Senator worked tirelessly as an advocate for quality public education and was universally revered by parents, educators and fellow state lawmakers for her dedication and integrity, The Foundation said.
The Public Education Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving public education in Nevada. Brown, a long-time member of the Foundation’s Board, spearheaded Barrick’s sponsorship of the Foundation’s Executive Leadership Academy, a program that teaches Nevada educators new strategies and tactics to improve the quality of public education across the state.
In his remarks at the Gala, Brown said he doesn’t think of himself as a hero. “I am just a fellow from a small town in Ohio, working to fulfill the dream of Barrick’s Founder, Peter Munk, who sought to turn gold into good. Education is the foundational partnership in every community where Barrick operates in the world. It is embedded in our DNA. Barrick is honored to receive this award.”
