People Barrick awarded for social responsibility by Canadian legal society

The Canadian General Counsel Awards recognize excellence in the in-house counsel community, and celebrate the accomplishments of the Canadian legal profession.

Barrick recently received the Social Responsibility Award at the 12th annual Canadian General Counsel Awards in Toronto. The award recognizes the role that Barrick’s legal group plays in the company’s social responsibility efforts, with emphasis on the company’s leading anti-corruption and human rights programs. It was the first time the company has won the nationwide award.

"The legal team is one piece of an integrated whole regarding the company’s sustainability efforts, so while the law group earned this award, it was a team effort with many functional units and sites," says Jonathan Drimmer, Barrick’s Deputy General Counsel. "The award is really a reflection of the company’s worldwide commitment to social responsibility."

The Canadian General Counsel Awards recognize excellence in the in-house counsel community and celebrate the accomplishments of the Canadian legal profession throughout the previous year. The Social Responsibility Award recognizes Barrick for its programs, and for publicly sharing its learnings in anti-corruption and human rights through multimedia, conference participation, and speaking engagements.

"It is imperative that every one of our people upholds our commitment to social responsibility every day. That is how you build trust, earn respect and form mutually beneficial, and long-lasting partnerships."

Giovanna Moscoso, Barrick’s Assistant General Counsel, plays a lead role in operationalizing these policies.

"Acting with integrity, transparency, and earning trust to build enduring partnerships are part of our values, and our programs reflect that," Moscoso says. "I think this recognition confirms that the Barrick people — in every functional unit and site — are truly committed to those values."

The award also acknowledges Barrick’s participation on the steering communities or boards of various civil society organizations, such as the Global Compact Network Canada, the UN Global Compact Business for Peace Initiative, and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. These and other similar organizations help companies which operate in high risk areas develop and implement responsible business practices.

"We operate all over the world, including some challenging regions with different social norms or weak rule-of-law," says Rich Haddock, Barrick’s General Counsel. "It is imperative that every one of our people upholds our commitment to social responsibility every day. That is how you build trust, earn respect and form mutually beneficial and long-lasting partnerships."
