Barrick is a long-time partner with the Western Shoshone people in northeastern Nevada, working closely under the 2008 Collaborative Agreement with eight tribal communities to help provide educational opportunities for Shoshone youth, sustain the Shoshone language and culture, and enhance overall community wellness.
As part of this effort, Barrick joined with the Friends of the British Council in the USA to offer the "Active Citizens" program to these communities.
Developed internationally by the British Council — the UK's global cultural relations organization — the program teaches participants leadership and project management skills, empowering them to build trust and understanding and spearhead sustainable development in their communities. To date, the program has trained 65 members of Barrick's Western Shoshone partner communities in Elko, South Fork, Battle Mountain, Wells, Duck Valley, Duckwater, Ely, and Yomba.
This video showcases the voices and passion of the youth from these communities who received Active Citizens training.
