At Barrick, proactively providing facts on mine water management and establishing participatory community water monitoring programs have proven to be two successful ways to prevent misinformation and build trusting relationships on water use with our host communities.
Dr. Mei Shelp is Barrick’s Manager of Hydrology and Air Sciences. She has 18 years of experience in the mining and environmental field. Prior to joining Barrick in 2007, she worked as a consulting engineer for Golder Associates (Canada). She received her Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from the China Agricultural University and earned a PhD in Land Resource Sciences and Master of Engineering from the University of Guelph. She has also completed the postdoctoral research program in Geotechnical Research at the University of Western Ontario. Mei is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Ontario. She lives in Guelph with her husband and two children and enjoys reading, hiking, mountain biking and wildlife viewing with her family during off time.
